I am running for Santa Monica College Board of Trustees because public education
matters. Community College is one of the best resources our society has for the improvement of lives among all our youth, our youth of color and non-traditional students, as well as the surrounding communities of Malibu and Santa Monica.
The development of our workforce is a big priority for me in an uncertain jobs market where skills of all kinds will be needed for success. Community College is on the forefront of those skills and opportunities, especially for marginalized groups. The Santa Monica College Promise should grow and expand. I believe I can deliver quality leadership to the College, its students and its faculty from my years of experience in good governance , fair labor practices and my background in education.
Along with my colleagues and the Administration, the goals I want to achieve at SMC include increasing enrollment, both in-person and online, helping to stabilize community college funding at the state level through my experience navigating legislation, and enhancing the offerings for our local communities in both
Malibu and Santa Monica.
We should endeavor to increase the transfer rate of our students of color and make sure our students, faculty and staff feel supported by the Board of Trustees by working with the Associated Students, the Faculty Association and CSEA and supporting the legislative goals of the College and of FACCC. We will seek great partners to achieve our goal of building affordable student and staff housing to help our housing-insecure enrollees.
I support a high counselor : student ratio. Pathways and persistence are the keys to
success for completing programs or transferring. Finishing year #2 is a big deal in community college for students with all kinds of formidable life challenges. I would strive to support groups on campus like Black Collegians, Adelante, CCAMPIS, DSPS, Student Veterans, Gender Sexuality Alliance and other diverse student facilitators who have the lived experience to mentor and guide our students. When considering the budget in lean times, we should prioritize the services and offerings that are student-facing and make sure that any potential budget cuts don’t come at the expense of communities of color, LGBTQ+, single parents, students from lower socio-economic backgrounds or communities with
different physical abilities.
